New site

Friends, I’m excited to announce that I’m wrapping up a new website at my Photoshelter page. From now on, I will no longer post images to this site. Check out my new site here: http://bryonhoulgrave.photoshelter.com/#!/index. Thanks!

Open road

Waking up early is never anything I do with a great amount of spirit. Crawling out of bed, usually with a haggard countenance and a temper akin to a bear waking up from hibernation, has never been my favorite thing in the world. Except when I know there’s an opportunity for a good photograph. When nature’s elements work come together to form a good image, it’s worth the early-morning alarm. This happened to me today during Day 4 of the RAGBRAI bike ride. I have others I like better than this photo, I just chose this one for the blog because the subject is waving.

Art along the bike route

Day four of the 2013 RAGBRAI ride included a couple of artists from Des Moines, who dressed up like statues in Knoxville.

Welcome home

Last week I covered a homecoming ceremony for a group of Iowa National Guard soldiers returning from a tour in the Middle East. After working the event I collected my things and made my way down the hallway, behind a soldier and his family. They all held hands. Sometimes the best shots happen when you’re leaving.

Independence Day in Spillville

The small Northeast Iowa community of Spillville seemingly outperforms itself each year when it comes to its Independence Day fireworks display.

Floods

As this seemingly endless band of severe weather continues to roll through the midwest, the copious amounts of rain have created swollen rivers and streams in parts of Iowa. Tonight I was called up to cover a new threat in New Hartford, where residents there are scrutinizing a levee, which could become compromised if the water levels continue to rise.

Grand Blue Mile

The annual Drake Relays Grand Blue Mile was held in downtown Des Moines on Tuesday. The event draws thousands annually, and some of the fastest mile-runners in the world. This year, Kate Grace slipped past defending champion Sara Hall to win the mile.

Japanese Macaque

I was at Blank Park Zoo today for the birthday celebration for Miya, a baby Japanese Macaque, who will turn 1-year-old tomorrow. Miya didn’t much care about the birthday “cupcake” zoo officials placed out there for her, but some in her group enjoyed it.

Storm Chasers

Due to a crazy schedule Saturday night, I shot only the first quarter the Iowa Barnstormers Arena football game against Philadelphia. Among the action shots, here are a couple from the Storm Chasers dance team.
